As one of the city’s most recognizable drag queens, I feel responsible to my community as a social connector to have a voice in the upcoming election. I’ve called San Francisco my home for all of my adult life and have played many roles here, including mother, muse, philanthropist, and collaborator.

The underlying spirit that binds all of these things together is a desire to make this city we all share–a better, more joyful place. There is an ever-expanding web of associations that I’ve brought together in the past 30 years as a drag queen.

I can’t do what I do and be happy without a thriving community of support. When that community is threatened, that’s where politics comes in. We are so close to going to the polls, and time is precious.

The issues that we currently face locally, nationally, and globally are serious on so many levels. There is not only a sense of urgency but one of responsibility. You must involve yourself with knowledge, facts, and sometimes by simply putting yourself in someone else’s shoes — because your vote can significantly affect those less fortunate than you.

I’ve said this before: I’m just one drag queen without a political action committee or big money backing me. So, if my voice can inspire my community to be involved and take action, I’m happy.

This November, don’t just vote, volunteer. This is one of the most critical elections of our lifetimes. We can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. Get involved. Take action for Democratic victories. Volunteer a few hours a week to make phone calls or texts for critical Congressional and Senate races. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the San Francisco Democratic Party have teamed up to open “VoteBlueSF” — a virtual Democratic volunteer hub to make it easy for us to take action to take back our country. Find out how to get involved at www.votebluesf.org.

I have created the Queer Agenda Voting Guide with the help of friends and community members whose opinions I trust that you can check out at juanitamore.com. You can download a PDF and you will also find links on registering, absentee and early voting. Plus, an amazing list of LBBTQ people running for office across the country thanks to the Victory Fund.
